Toihuarangi
A thoughtfully designed orchard can produce enough nutrient dense food to supply an entire community with fruit at all times of the year, and, with the right care can do so for 50-100 years or more - a true symbol of intergenerational food security.
Toihuarangi is ōNuku Aotearoa’s pilot program that is supporting Māori community groups (such as marae, papa kāinga, kura etc) to establish productive orchard landscapes to feed the current and coming generations.
Toihuarangi - the regenerating community orchards program
Toihuarangi - the regenerating community orchards program - partners with Māori communities to co-design, plant, and maintain a resilient food-producing landscape using regenerative and agroecological principles. Rooted in Māori frameworks and facilitated through a seasonal program of wānanga, the kaupapa will guide each cohort through:
site analysis
site preparation planning
orchard design
thoughtful selection of tree varieties
propagation
orchard installation
long-term maintenance
Over two years our nursery, in collaboration with each cohort, will grow the entire orchard worth of trees from scratch - including fruit trees, native shelterbelt systems, and any companion species for soil regeneration.
