Nukurei Nursery

In 2025 Nukurei Nursery was born: a values-driven Māori social enterprise generating revenue for our charitable purpose and equipping Māori communities with the resources and support for lasting intergenerational food resilience.

Specialising in fruit trees, native species, and regenerative companion plants, Nukurei is well-positioned to become a trusted supplier for iwi, hapū, and marae-led food resilience and ecological restoration initiatives around Northland. Our small scale commercial focus is purpose-driven - each sale generating revenue to grow the impacts of our charitable program - Toihuarangi.

“NUKU-REI” the name

The name Nukurei combines two meaningful elements: Nuku speaks of the earth — the living whenua beneath our feet, the foundation of all growth and nourishment. Rei, a term of deep reverence, evokes something treasured and sacred. Together, Nukurei is a name that honours the land as both source and taonga - reflecting ōNuku’s purpose - to revere and restore the Taiao through regenerative food systems.

During ōNuku Aotearoa’s early years of designing and testing wānanga, we recognised that achieving meaningful, whānau-led outcomes in regenerative food systems requires strong practical resourcing and skilled facilitative collaboration to support communities toward intergenerational food security. We also acknowledged the ongoing uncertainty of external funding. From this understanding, Nukurei Nursery was created and signals the beginning of our transition into a commercially sustainable, kaupapa Māori social enterprise.
