ōNuku Aotearoa
ōNuku Aotearoa is a Māori charitable trust dedicated to strengthening long term and local community level food security, resilience, and environmental regeneration.
Tucked away down a gravel road on the North Hokianga, our plant & propagation hub, Nukurei Nursery, supplies fruit trees, regenerative companion plants, and native species to community projects and for sale to the public with all proceeds supporting our charitable program - Toihuarangi.
Toitū te whenua, tū teitei ko te Wao-Nui-oTāne - Soil, the foundational life force that excites the formation of a towering forest.
BACKGROUND
ōNuku Aotearoa was established in 2020 by a group of young Māori practitioners with deep roots in community development, environmental education, and social innovation.
Driven by a growing urgency around ecological degradation, and a shared commitment to the Taiao and community food sovereignty, a series of four wānanga was launched bringing together kura leaders from Hokianga, marae reps, and community champions to co-design and install a small local scale food system. Since then, ōNuku has had the great fortune of hosting and organising a range of kaupapa and hands on workshop style wānanga through Te Tai Tokerau. Grounded within kaupapa Māori, community focused values, held by the collective wisdom of a local network of mahinga kai practitioners.
