ōNuku Aotearoa
ōNuku Aotearoa is a Māori charitable trust dedicated to strengthening long term and local community level food security, resilience, and environmental regeneration.
Through Nukurei Nursery, we grow and supply fruit trees, regenerative companion plants, and native species for communities and the public. Every tree sold helps fund Toihuarangi, our programme for regenerating community orchards.
Toitū te whenua, tū teitei ko te Wao-Nui-oTāne - Soil, the foundational life force that excites the formation of a towering forest.
BACKGROUND
ōNuku Aotearoa was established in 2020 by a group of young Māori practitioners with deep roots in community development, environmental education, and social innovation.
Driven by a growing urgency around ecological degradation, and a shared commitment to the Taiao and community food sovereignty, a series of four wānanga was launched bringing together kura leaders from Hokianga, marae representatives, and community champions to co-design and install a small local scale food system. This was the first expression of ōNuku’s kaupapa. Since then, ōNuku has established a strong track record of delivering high-quality wānanga across Te Tai Tokerau, grounded in mātauranga Māori, regenerative practice, and powered by the collective wisdom of a local network of mahinga kai practitioners.
