ōNuku Aotearoa is a Māori charitable trust with a community centred social enterprise based in the Hokianga. Our goal is to empower Aotearoa toward inter-generational food security. Nukurei Nursery is our propagation hub supplying fruit trees, regenerative companion plants, and natives to community projects, and for sale to the public. Each tree sold generates income to give back to our charitable kaupapa: Toihuarangi - the regenerating community orchards program.

Background - ōNuku Aotearoa

ōNuku Aotearoa was established in 2020 by a group of young Māori practitioners with deep roots in community development, environmental education, and social innovation. Driven by a growing urgency around ecological degradation, and a shared commitment to the Taiao and community food sovereignty, a series of four wānanga was launched bringing together together kura leaders from Hokianga, marae representatives, and community champions to co-design and install a small local scale food system. This was the first expression of ōNuku’s kaupapa. Since then, ōNuku has established a strong track record of delivering high-quality wānanga across Te Tai Tokerau, grounded in mātauranga Māori, regenerative practice, and powered by the collective wisdom of a local network of mahinga kai practitioners.
